On screen: Level 1: 6 to win off 6 balls, 3 wickets in hand. The bowler runs in and bowls, and the batter drives the ball along the ground past mid-on. It runs to the rope for four.

On screen: The next ball is hit in the air, straight back over the bowler's head and over the rope for six, and the chase is won. Level 2: 12 to win off 6 balls.

Cricket is a batting game. Each level is a chase: so many runs to win off so many balls, with only so many wickets in hand. The bowler runs in and bowls to you, and you choose when to play your shot and where to hit it. Hit it along the ground to the rope for four, or over the rope for six. Hit it at a fielder and there is no run, and in the air near one and you may be caught. Miss a ball on the stumps and you are bowled.

How to play

F plays your shot. Its moment is everything: meet the ball just as it reaches you. A little early pulls it to the leg side, on your right of the screen, and a little late steers it to the off side, on the left. Too early or too late and you miss it, or edge it to the keeper.

The arrow keys say where: Up straight back past the bowler, Left through the off side, Right through the leg side, Down fine behind you, and two together between them. Hold Space as you play the shot to hit it in the air, for six, or to be caught if it is not hit well.

On a phone, the game fills the screen: the stick says where, Hit plays the shot, and Loft held hits it in the air.

The seven chases

  1. The first over: 6 to win off 6 balls, gentle bowling, and the spot where each ball will bounce is shown.
  2. Pace: 12 off 6, quicker and wider.
  3. Swing: 18 off 12, the ball moving in the air.
  4. Spin: 15 off 12, slower, turning off the pitch, the keeper up at the stumps.
  5. Bouncers: 20 off 12, fast, some balls short and up at your chest.
  6. Yorkers: 24 off 12, full balls aimed at your feet.
  7. The last over: 15 off 6 against the best of them.

Win the last chase and they start again, harder: more to get, quicker bowling and sharper fielders. Your best level is kept on your device.
