Announce

A still, dignified stance for a speech or an announcement: a slight lean in and a slow, steady bob.

What it is for

Announce is for a character who has the floor: a narrator reading the title, a teacher at the front of the class, a herald about to say "Hear ye!". It stands well under a long line because nothing in it moves fast. The move Walk on and off uses exactly this lean and bob for its middle part, while the visiting character says its piece.

The principle it shows: staging

Staging is about making the important thing clear. When a character is speaking, the important thing is the words, so its body should stay calm and readable. Announce gives it just enough to stay alive, a lean toward the audience and a slow bob, and nothing that pulls the eye away from the face. A small lean is also a classic way to show attention: we lean toward what matters to us.

The program, line by line

when it starts
  set rot 1.5
  abssin wave on dy · w 1.6 · amp -4

That is all: two blocks. Many good moves are this small. The hard part is choosing the numbers: a lean of 1.5 degrees reads as composure, while 6 degrees, the first edit below, already reads as eagerness.

Try this

  1. Lean 6 degrees instead of 1.5. The character now tips clearly toward its audience, eager rather than dignified.

    In the program: set · to.rot 1.5 → 6

  2. Make the bob 12 pixels instead of 4. Each bob now looks like the character rising on its toes to make a point.

    In the program: wave · amp -4 → -12

How it differs from Talk, Fidget and Proud

Talk follows the voice: the louder the line, the more it moves. Announce does not listen to the voice at all. Fidget has the same small bob but a lean that drifts slowly back and forth, so it looks restless instead of composed. Proud puffs the body up and tucks the arms in; Announce leaves the shape of the body alone.

Works on

Worked out by the build: it plays the move in the engine on each body and checks what moves on screen. Nobody types this table.
