Arms folded

The arms come up and cross at the chest, each hand tucked by the other elbow, while the body settles back a little and the chin comes up; then it stays so.

What it is for

Arms folded is for a character who is waiting, unconvinced or not about to move: the friend who is not impressed, the guard at the door, someone who has heard this before. It holds its last pose, so it can stay on a character for a whole scene while the others talk.

The principle it shows: a pose says how someone feels

Nothing moves once the arms are folded, yet the pose still speaks. Leaning back with the chin up reads as confident or stubborn; the try edits show how a few degrees of the chest and the head change that.

Try this

  1. Lean back 10 degrees instead of 3. Arms folded and leaning away: a stubborn no.

    In the program: ramp ยท to.part:torso#1 -3 โ†’ -10

  2. Drop the chin 10 degrees instead of lifting it 3. The same folded arms now read as sulking.

    In the program: ramp ยท to.part:head -3 โ†’ 10

How it differs from Hands on hips and Wait (tap foot)

Hands on hips puts the hands at the hips, ready for action; Arms folded closes the body off. Wait (tap foot) starts the same way and adds the impatience.

Works on

The two in the film above, and what the move turns on each: worked out by the build, which plays the move on each body and checks what moves. Nobody types this table.
