Proud

A held, puffed-up stance: the body a little wider and taller, the arms tucked in toward it, a small bob and knees that give with it.

A cartoon person standing slightly larger than normal with the right forearm folded across the front, and a dog standing beside it.

What it is for

Proud is for a character who has just done something well and wants to be seen: the winner on the podium, the child holding up a drawing, the dog who brought back the ball. It holds still enough to stand under a boastful line. This move was first made for a crab-shaped character, whose claws went up in a flex; on the person and the kid in this studio the arms swing in toward the body instead, so on them it reads as a satisfied, self-hugging stance rather than a muscle pose.

The principle it shows: appeal

Appeal is what makes a character pleasant to watch, and size is one of its simplest tools. Proud makes the body 4% wider and 3% taller and holds it there: a small change, but next to a character at normal size it reads clearly as chest out, head up. The knees giving with each bob keep the pose from turning into a statue.

The program, line by line

when it starts
  abssin wave on dy · w 2 · amp -4
set left arm 18, right arm -18, sx 1.04, sy 1.03
  abssin wave on left shin + right shin · w 2 · amp 4

Try this

  1. Puff the width up to 115% instead of 104%. The character now looks pleased with itself in a big, comic way, chest out like a pigeon.

    In the program: set · to.sx 1.04 → 1.15

  2. Let the knees give 15 degrees instead of 4. The small bob turns into a springy little bounce on the spot, like someone too proud to keep still.

    In the program: wave · amp 4 → 15

How it differs from Point and Announce

Point holds one arm turned in further and adds a lean, with no puff and no knee movement. Announce keeps the arms alone and only leans in a touch while bobbing, the stance of someone about to make a speech. Proud is the one that changes the body's size.

Works on

Worked out by the build: it plays the move in the engine on each body and checks what moves on screen. Nobody types this table.
