Stab

Quick and short: the blade drawn back a hand's width by the hip, then jabbed straight ahead, the elbow straightening and the weight driving forward a little, and back at once.

What it is for

A fast, short attack with a dagger or a short sword: a soldier testing your guard, a thief striking first.

The principle it shows: a small wind-up

A stab is fast because it barely winds up: the hand goes back only a little, then the elbow straightens and the body leans in behind it. Small moves are quick; the Hit! comes early, at the point's furthest reach. The wrist bends toward the little finger as the arm goes out, so the blade, which runs through the fist along the knuckles, comes down in line with the forearm and points where the arm points.

Try this

  1. Slow the draw-back from 0.08 s to 0.1 s: a stab you can see coming.

In the program: ramp ยท over 0.08 โ†’ 0.1

  2. Raise the sword arm to 39 degrees instead of 30: a stab at the chest rather than the belly.

    In the program: ramp ยท to.part:arm:1 30 โ†’ 39

How it differs from the others

Thrust is a full lunge with a step; a stab stays where it stands.
