Sit (four legs)

Staying seated for four legs: the rear stays down on the folded back legs, breathing, blinking and wagging its tail now and then, looping every 4 seconds until a game stands the character back up.

What it is for

Sit (four legs) is the sit of the nine game cycles, written for the fours set: it holds the pose Sit down (four legs) settles into, breathing, blinking and wagging its tail now and then, looping every 4 seconds for as long as a game leaves the character there.

The principle it shows: overlapping action

The breath and the head's own sway share the same four-second period but start at a different point in it, the same layering the upright sit uses. The tail wag runs on its own separate one-second rhythm, a detail the upright sit has no equivalent of at all, since it is the one part of a dog's or a cat's body that keeps moving even in an otherwise quiet hold.

The program, line by line

settings: h = 540, leg = 0.33, on = 0
when it starts
  show the side view
  set torso 34, head -16, tail 16, dy (-0.01*h)
  sin wave on sy · every 4 s · amp 0.01
  sin wave on head · every 4 s · amp 3 · phase 0.8
  sin wave on tail · every 1 s · amp 10
  possin wave on blink · every 4 s · amp 1 · phase 1.2 · power 40

Try this

  1. Wag the tail 20 degrees each way instead of 10. The settled hold reads as a visibly happier, more eager sit.

    In the program: wave · amp 10 → 20

  2. Breathe more than twice as deep, 0.01 to 0.025. The seated hold reads as a slow, deliberate breath rather than ordinary quiet rest.

    In the program: wave · amp 0.01 → 0.025

How it differs from Sit down (four legs) and Stand up (four legs)

Sit down (four legs) is the motion of settling into this pose. Stand up (four legs) is what a game switches to when it is time to leave this pose behind.

Works on

Worked out by the build: it plays the move in the engine on each body and checks what moves on screen. Nobody types this table.
